Why Bath Magick?

When above the heavens did not yet exist nor the earth below, Apsu the freshwater ocean was there, the first, the begetter, and Tiamat, the Saltwater Sea, She who Bore Them All“ (Enuma Elish, Tablet 1)

Greetings Magickal Practitioner!

I am excited to speak with you today about a form of magick that I absolutely love - Bath Magick!

Born out of necessity 14 years ago I started performing meditations and rituals while in the bath. My schedule was really limited at the time and I needed a way to keep up with my magical practices. While conducting different forms of ritual and meditations in the water I noticed that there was a genuine power therein. As I have learned over the years I was not wrong about this. Water has long been used as part of magickal practices throughout time and across cultures. Today, I continue to incorporate bath rituals as a part of my daily regime simply because it works!

The sacredness of water has been revered since the dawn of man. With our very origins stemming from The Sacred Waters of She Who Bore Them All. She - who is that Sacred Force, the original Elixir, the Life Blood of both Creation and Sustenance. We are all of this source who is also flowing through our veins within our very own Sacred Body Temples. From the life-giving amniotic waters we are born, and through water, life is sustained through this interconnectedness of all creatures of Land, Sky, and Sea.

Indigenous peoples have passed down stories of the Sacredness of Water throughout generations. In these wise teachings, it is told that water is revered as a living being with a spirit. The various bodies of water are unique with their own personalities and emotions. As such water may become happy and helpful or sad and angry when mistreated. It is also said that each body of water has its own set of roles and responsibilities. We are taught that great care must always surround our relationship with water. Water should be approached with respect and compassion, much as we would a loved one or a respected elder.

There are also ancient beliefs that speak of water having the capacity of holding memory.

For this reason, some magical traditions suggest that water be consecrated before magickal use. Personally, I make my decision as to whether or not to consecrate water based on many factors. Primarily how the water feels, and secondly due consideration is given to where the water was obtained. When you set about drawing your own ritual bath you will be in the best position to make this call for yourself. If you live in a city and have a chemically treated water supply you may want to consecrate the water before charging it with your Magickal Intent.

I have traveled across Ireland, several times, visiting ancient monuments and sacred wells. I have experienced the energetic presence of these sacred wells that are believed to embody various healing virtues. Being in the presence of such liminal places and learning directly from locals about the many folk traditions that have been passed on throughout time concerning these places I became even more enamored by the magical potential and potency of water! I am such a bath witch and as such perform many rituals in my Sacred Bath Cauldron of Transformational Waters and I am so excited to share this with you.

Ritual baths have also been used across cultures for a very long time for a variety of magickal aims. In recent times it seems the most commonly discussed are “uncrossing baths”. Many of these utilize traditional herbal blends where the individual makes a “bath tea” in a large bucket or bowl allowing the mixture to cool to lukewarm. Then the individual takes a bath or shower and wash the body and hair. After which the herbal mixture is scooped out with a bowl or ladle and poured over the entire body including the head. The theory behind this is that the body must be washed clean from blockages and dirt to enable the mixture to fully take effect. This is an excellent method that is still utilized by many practitioners today including myself, at times. However, being the modern and busy witch that I am, I have discovered an effective method to simplify this process. Instead, I use ritual salt blends that are created specifically for my bath magick. With these ritually created salt blends, you can conduct your very own bath rituals! Also with an upcoming course on how to create your own blends, I will share my personal tips, tricks, recipes, and how to create your own fragrant magickal blends! When creating your very own bath rituals it is important to be mindful of the long-held beliefs and customs surrounding water. To make water a magickal ally and to strive to make a conscious effort to work with water to bring about your desired change. This is also part of the process to learning of the Secret Mysteries of Water, if you are open to them. By performing a bath ritual, you are harnessing the natural tendencies of water to hold energy, to give and sustain life, for your own magickal purposes.

Not only do our physical bodies need water to survive, our souls also yearn for it. That is why so many of us feel the urge to go for a swim or have a bath when we feel unbalanced or unwell. There is an instinctual knowing to this.

Dr. Masaru Emoto studied in great detail the structure of water molecules and how they change based on energetic circumstances and location. He further went on to study variations in water molecules from different locations including sacred wells. The results are fascinating and support the long-held belief that water can be extremely transformative. From these works, we can know with great certainty that our words, thoughts, and the purposeful direction of our will can create change within the water. So through the purposeful implementation of bath magick in your life, you are tapping into this wisdom turning your bathtub into a very Sacred Cauldron of Transformation within and without!

Until Next Time, I wish you Dark & Wild Blessings!
